How to Set Goals and Improve Your Motivation

One of the hardest parts about any type of mental health condition is that finding the motivation to complete tasks can be really difficult. For instance, if you’re depressed, you probably don’t want to get out of bed. If you’re anxious, you might find yourself paralyzed with fear. I’ve been to both of those places. One thing that helps me accomplish tasks is setting goals for myself. Here are some goal-setting tips that might help you as well.

Apply the SMART acronym to set your goals.

Always remember that no matter how trivial your goals may seem to other people, they are YOUR goals. They all matter. One of the most important things (that I learned the hard way) is to be honest with yourself about how much you think you can do right now. A well-known way to do that is to remember the SMART acronym (Indeed, 2021).

  • Specific
  • Measurable
  • Attainable
  • Relevant
  • Timely

When you examine goals by applying the SMART acronym, you can find out how clear they are so you can take appropriate actions. To make your goals measurable, you must be able to track your progress.
